Verse 16 She considerath a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard
In this verse what I get is a person who carefully analyses things before jumping into them. You don’t have to go doing something just because someone else is doing it and they look successful, or happy in it. I love what the Amplified version states ” expanding prudently and not courting neglect of her present duties”.Before going into something new, you first work on the basics or normal duties and responsibilities, before adding something else to your plate. That can only happen once someone has taken time to seriously analyse the situation.
Verse 17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strerngtheneth her arms
This shows the aspect of a hardworking person repeated, for you to be strong you have to be fit, we therefore need to take care of our bodies eat healthy, exercise etc. Another aspect I see is the spiritual, mental and emotional strength. If one is not well anchored, when something small happens, it’s easy to blow with emotions mostly us ladies and later regret every decision made after that. This can only happen with spiritual nourishment from God’s word, for emotional and mental stability we have to feed our minds with the right information. If you don’t do well with books, you could consider listening to audios as you do your normal duties, preferably in the morning as you start the day, and evening before you go to bed, so don’t give the excuse of I don’t love reading, although reading books has always been the best way of getting information.
Verse 18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good, her candle goeth not out by night.
In the previous verses we saw that she had businesses, now other than just doing business she takes time to figure out whether the business is making profits. Personal evaluation is also very key. The life God has given us we will have to give an account, therefore it would be great to just sit and evaluate whether we are doing what we were created to do, as well as whether the resources we have been given are adding value.
On the matter of her candle not going out, those days they never used to have electricity like we do, therefore to ensure one had light at night they had to have enough oil. This goes back to the issue of planning, then another aspect comes in, since we are meant to be the light of the world, even when we get to the dark issues of life, our light should continue shining. We should be a beam of light all day and all night. That is what our bridegroom Jesus expects of us as His bride.
Verse 19 She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff
This woman never ceases to amaze me, reading and studying about her just makes me wonder how one person would have all these things happening in her life. Now here we see her skillful hands, in our days we might not have a spindle but what we see here is excellence that comes with skill, skill is grown by knowledge and practice. For whatever we do we need to ensure we have all the skills required, we might not have it all in the beginning but as we grow doing giving our best then we achieve excellence. So like this woman, we should not just be hardworking but also skillful, for our efforts to bare fruit.
Verse 20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor, yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy
Here we see another turn, the hardworking ambitious skillful woman has open arms for the needy. Its easy to feel that what we are earning is too little to give, but other than what we’re earning we have a lot to give. At times all we need to give is a helping hand, a hearing ear, a word of encouragement. We only need to check around us, and see whom we can be of help to.
As I read this chapter I continue seeing how much God expects of us, even before we go to the human husbands, I hope you’ll be challenged just as I am to be a better person.
